Potter Stewart Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, 1958-1981 Potter Stewart in 1958 Born in Jackson, Michigan, January 23, 1915. Graduated from Yale University Law School, 1941. Served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Cincinnati, Ohio, City Council, 1950-1953. Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, 1954-1958. Appointed to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Justice Harold H. Burton on October 7, 1958; sworn in October 14. President Dwight Eisenhower made the appointment while Congress was out of session. The Senate confirmed Stewart's nomination of May 5, 1959. Stewart being congratulated by Justice Harold
