Republic
of Upper Volta (République de Haute-Volta)
The Republic of Upper Volta was proclaimed in
Ouagadougou on August 5, 1960, and Maurice
Yaméogo remained its President. |
The First Flag
of Mali
was adopted on April 4, 1959, when French Sudan
and Senegal formed the Mali
Federation. Mali continued to use the flag after
the Republic of Mali was proclaimed on September
22, 1960. The flag was made of three equal
vertical green, gold, and red stripes; the golden
stripe was charged by a black ideogram known as a
katanga. |
Kingdom
of Dahomey
"Founded" in the mid-1600's,
the Kingdom of Dahomey was by the mid-1700's a
major power in western Africa, thanks to a
professional army that was exceptionally well
disciplined. The kingdom prospered financially
thanks to the slave trade, but the loss of that
trade ultimately led to its downfall. |
Blaise
Diagne
became the first African to be elected to the
French National Assembly in 1914, and ultimately
served until his death in 1934. In that body he
successfully lobbied for a bill granting full
French citizenship for four coastal communities
in Senegal. |
