World Distribution of Glaciers
Many of the world's best-known glaciers are in the French and Swiss Alps, including the Mer de Glace on Mont Blanc and the Aletsch Glacier near the Jungfrau. The Jostedal Glacier in Norway is the largest on the European continent, covering about 300 square miles. Major glaciers also cover regions of northwestern North America. The largest and most famous of these is the 840-square-mile Malaspina Glacier on Yakutat Bay in Alaska. Other notable glaciers are found in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, Glacier National Park in Montana, and Mount Rainier in Washington. SEE ALSO |
