JANUARY

1 Canada began a year-long centennial celebration.

3 Jack Ruby, killer of Lee Harvey Oswald, died.

4 Donald Campbell, holder of the world water speed record of 276.33 mph, was killed while attempting to better it, at Coniston Water, England.

6 The Angostura Bridge across the Orinoco River was opened to traffic, at Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela.

10 The U.S. House of Representatives declined to seat Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., pending investigation of his behavior.
10 The Georgia General Assembly elected Lester G. Maddox governor.

11 Lani Bird II (aka Intelsat II F-2), a communications satellite, was launched at Cape Kennedy, Florida.

Etienne Eyadema13 Togolese President Nicolas Grunitzky was deposed in a military coup led by Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant Colonel Étienne Eyadéma.

14 About 20,000 people participated in the Human Be-In in San Francisco, California.

16 Lynden O. Pindling took office as the first black Prime Minister of The Bahamas.
16 The first U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Alan Stephenson Boyd, took office.
16 McCormick Place, in Chicago, Illinois, was destroyed by fire.

27 The United Nations Arms in Space Ban Treaty was signed by 62 countries at ceremonies in Washington, London, and Moscow.
27 A flash fire inside an Apollo spacecraft during a test at Cape Kennedy killed astronauts Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H. White II, and Roger B. Chaffee.

FEBRUARY

3 Demba Diop, a prominent political leader in Senegal, was assassinated.

5 Lunar Orbiter III was launched from Cape Kennedy.

6 Tanzania nationalized all commercial banks within its borders.

7 One of the worst brush fires in Australian history devastated a large area in southern Tasmania.

10 The 25th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution, specifying the presidential line of succession, was ratified.

13 The first fully operational "three-dimensional" radar screens for air traffic control were put into use at the New York City ARTCC at Bohemia, Long Island.

14 A treaty banning nuclear weapons in Latin America was signed by 14 countries in Mexico City, Mexico.

15 Arthur da Costa e Silva was inaugurated President of Brazil.

16 The U. S.-Soviet Consular Treaty was ratified by the U.S. Senate.

17 Roland D. Michener, was sworn in as Governor-General of Canada, succeeding the late Georges P. Vanier.

30 President Lyndon Johnson signed an executive order officially establishing a U.S. Department of Transportation.
30 The Southeast Asia Commonwealth (SEACOM) formally opened a communications cable from Guam to Australia.

APRIL

1 Chief of State Nguyen Van Thieu signed a new constitution for South Vietnam.
1 The Federal Aviation Agency officially became part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, as the Federal Aviation Administration.

4 Petrus J. S. de Jong became Prime Minister of the Netherlands, ending a 47-day government crisis.

5 Grayline Bus began giving "hippie tours" of Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, California.

6 Trans World Airlines retired its last propellor-driven airliner, making it the first major U.S. airline to have an all-jet fleet.

10 The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists reached a settlement with the American, Mutual, and National Broadcasting systems, ending a 13-day strike.

11 Hugh H. Shearer succeeded the late Sir Donald B. Sangster as Prime Minister of Jamaica.

21 The Greek Army seized control of the government and installed Constantine Kollias, a civilian, as Prime Minister.
21 Svetlana Alliluyeva, daughter of Joseph Stalin, defected to the United States.
21 A series of tornadoes killed 49 persons and injured about 1,500 in northern Illinois.

23 King Hussein of Jordan named Saad Jumma to head a new government.

24 Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov became the first man to die during a space mission when the parachute of his Soyuz 1 spacecraft failed to open during Earth re-entry.

1 Anastasio Somoza Debayle was inaugurated President of Nicaragua.
1 McDonnell Company and Douglas Aircraft Company combined to form the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation.

4 Lunar Orbiter IV was launched at Cape Kennedy on a photographic mission to the Moon.

5 Ariel III, the first satellite entirely designed and built in Great Britain, was launched at Vandenberg Air Force Base.
5 The New York World Journal Tribune folded.

12 Stokely Carmichael resigned as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

14 Zakir Husain was inaugurated as the first Moslem President of India.
14 Liverpool, England, consecrated the Cathedral of Christ the King, its first since the city was made a Roman Catholic Archdiocese in 1850.

15 The U. S. Supreme Court ruled that children under arrest are entitled to the same constitutional protections as adults.

18 Tennessee repealed its law banning the teaching of evolution in public schools.

19 The United Nations ended peace-keeping patrols in Gaza and Sinai.

20 A male heir to the Greek throne was born to King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie.

28 Sir Francis Chichester completed a solo 226-day, 28,500-mile sailing trip around the world.

30 Nigeria's Eastern Region seceded as the independent Republic of Biafra.

2 Riots broke out in the Roxbury District of Boston, Massachusetts, after a Mothers for Adequate Welfare sit-in.
2 U. S. Army doctor Captain Howard Levy was convicted of refusing to train Green Berets medical corpsmen for Vietnam duty.

4 Israeli fighter bombers struck air bases in the United Arab Republic, Jordan, and Syria.
4 British Midland Flight G-ALHG crashed in Hopes Carr, Stockport, England, killing 72 persons.

6 U. S. astronaut Air Force Major Edward G. Givens was killed in an automobile crash in Houston, Texas.

8 The U. S. Navy electronics ship Liberty was mistakenly attacked by Israeli forces in the Mediterranean Sea; 34 crewmen were killed.

10 Abdirascid Ali Scermarche was elected President of Somalia by the National Assembly.
10 Joseph Cardinal Ritter, Archbishop of St. Louis, Missouri, died.

11 National Guardsmen were called out to quell race riots in Tampa, Florida, and Cincinnati, Ohio.

12 U. S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Tom C. Clark retired.
