How Machines Change the Directions of Motion

Changing linear motion into rotary motion requires some kind of piston, a connecting rod, a crankshaft, and a flywheel. The back-and-forth movements of the piston push and pull the connecting rod, which rotates the flywheel. Three stages of rotation are shown in illustration below.

Changing rotary motion into linear motion involves the use of a wheel, drive pin, and slotted yoke. The drive pin on the revolving wheel slides within the slot of the yoke, causing the yoke and the rod attached to the yoke to move back and forth, as shown in the illustration below.
