The Law of the Conservation of Energy Energy can be changed in form, but cannot be created or destroyed. The drawings below illustrate the law stated above. The croquet player, using his foot,
positions his ball, 1, against an opponent's ball, 2, and
then swings his mallet and transmits energy through ball
1 to ball 2, which rockets off. The pool player's cue has the same
effect on the cue ball and the racked balls. In each case, measurements would show that the total energy of the moving croquet or pool balls equals that imparted by the cue stick or mallet, allowing for some heat energy loss to friction. |
