Built between 1952 and 1957, the current Keokuk Lock replaced a 1910-1913 lock, That lock, and an associated dam, obliterated the Des Moines Rapids, which until then had effectively been the northern barrier to traffic on the Mississippi River.

The old lock, which was 110 feet wide, 358 feet long, and 40 feet tall, a 130x463x20-foot dry dock, the Keokuk Dam, and the current lock are now listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Lock and Dam No. 19 Historic District.
