Nuclear
Regulatory Commission
An independent agency of the
United States government responsible for reactor
safety oversight and reactor license renewal of
existing plants, materials safety oversight and
materials licensing for a variety of purposes,
and waste management of both high-level and
low-level waste.
The NRC was established by the
Energy Reorganization Act of 1974, which
abolished the Atomic Energy Commission and
transferred its regulatory responsibilities to
the NRC. It began operations on January 19, 1975,
with headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. All
developmental activities were merged into a new
Energy Research and Development Administration,
which in 1977 became part of the Department of
Energy.
