Boy Scouts in 1957 The 47th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America was celebrated by all Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout troops, and Explorer Units during Boy Scout Week, February 6-12. Events included decoration of local store windows, special programs in schools, Cub circuses, Scout expositions, and special church services. The theme of the week was "Onward for God and My Country." Fifty thousand Boy Scouts and Explorers attended the National Jamboree at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, July 12-19. In addition to traditional scouting activities, the Scouts enjoyed archery contests, obstacle races, demonstrations of axmanship, skyrockets at night, bands, and tours around Valley Forge and nearby Philadelphia. Many Scouts from other countries also participated in the National Jamboree. opening of the National Jamboree The 100th birthday of Lord Baden-Powell and the 50th anniversary of the founding of Scouting in England were observed at the World Jamboree at Sutton Park, near Birmingham, England, August 1-12. World Jamboree 1957 patch Another interesting activity during 1957 was an international exchange of American Explorers and foreign Senior Scouts. The Americans were flown as guests of the U.S. Air Force to Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Greece, and Turkey, while Senior Scouts from those countries were flown to the United States for a tour. Another group of American Explorers visted Japan, Formosa, Korea, and the Philippines, while their counterparts visited America. SEE ALSO |
