York City Meter Maids The
Mayor of New York City, New York, Robert F.
Wagner, and city traffic officials inspect
"Meter Maids" on June 1, 960. The new
unit comprised 100 women who would patrol 120
metered areas of the city in 20 teams of 5
persons each. In addition to serving as
collectors of parking meter revenue, the women
were empowered to issue warnings and summonses
for violations.
