The National Woman's Christian Temperance Union
was founded on November 18, 1874, with a mission to obtain pledges of total abstinence from alcohol. It has since expanded its mission to include divorce laws, abuse of women and children, sexual crimes against women, and equal rights for women in the workplace.

took it upon herself to see to it that temperance laws were enforced in Kansas. An eloquent speaker, she also adamantly opposed tobacco and immodesty in women's dress.
Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard
Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard
served as president of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union from 1879 to 1898. Under her leadership, the NWCTU expanded its mission to include woman suffrage, the raising of the age of consent, the establishment of strict rape laws, the right of women to become ministers and preachers, and many other women's issues.
