Gills
Unlike land animals, most fish get their oxygen from water, which contains a certain amount of dissolved oxygen. To get that oxygen, fish gulp water into the mouth and then pump it over gills.

Scales
are the remnants of the bony armor which enveloped the very earliest fishes. Most fish, but not all, have scales as a protective coating for the skin. Scales may be of four different kinds -- placoid, ganoid, cycloid, and ctenoid.
