Gills Unlike land animals, most fish get their oxygen from water, which contains a certain amount of dissolved oxygen. To get that oxygen, fish gulp water into the mouth and then pump it over gills. |
Scales are the remnants of the bony armor which enveloped the very earliest fishes. Most fish, but not all, have scales as a protective coating for the skin. Scales may be of four different kinds -- placoid, ganoid, cycloid, and ctenoid. |
