Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum)
This colorful crane is easily recognized by its large yellow crown, each feather of which is tipped with black. It is one of only two crane species capable of perching in trees.
American Coot (Fulica americana)American Coot (Fulica americana)
Coots are similar to ducks in general appearance, except coots have lobed feet while ducks have webbed feet. American coots are found from Maine and New Brunswick west to the Pacific Coast, with some populations making their way to Florida and Central America during the winter months.
The Whooping Crane (Grus americana)
is the tallest bird in North America, standing about 5 feet. It is also one of the rarest birds in North America, with a truly wild population of only about 300 individuals, and another population that has been "trained" to migrate by following an ultralight aircraft.
Kagu (Rhynochetos jubatus)The Kagu (Rhynochetos jubatus)
is a flightless bird found only on the remote Pacific island of New Caledonia. Once in danger of extinction, the New Caledonian government has taken steps to protect the remaining population, although it is still threatened by non-native predators.
