Solar
Activity in 1959 One of the greatest
solar flares ever seen occurred on May 10. The
flare, photographed at a New Mexico observatory,
measured 50,000 miles in width and 100,000 miles
in height.

A total eclipse of the Sun occurred on October
2, starting in Boston, Massachusetts, at dawn,
crossing the Atlantic Ocean to the Canary Islands
and central Africa, and stopping in the Indian
Ocean. Poor weather conditions, however,
prevented observation from the surface along most
of the path.
This photo of the Sun's corona was tken
from an altitude of 21,000 feet during the solar
eclipse over Boston.
