An Orrery
is essentially a model of the solar system as seen from
the "outside," with the Sun at the center, that
accurately recreates the rotation of the planets around
the Sun, along with, in many models, the rotation of the
various moons around their respective planets.
Palomar
Observatory
is located about 40 miles northeast of San Diego.
Completed in 1947, the observatory's main instrument is
the 200-inch Hale Telescope, which is capable of
photographing objects several billion light-years away.
The Space Globe
was devised at Tokyo (Japan) University and placed on the
market in 1960. Surrounding a small, opaque globe of the
Earth in the center are movable spheres representing the
Moon and other planets. The clear exterior sphere is
imprinted with some of the major constellations.
Hans Lippershey
probably did not invent the concept of a refracting
telescope, but he did create the first known example of
such a device, in 1608.
