On August 1, 1979, Linda Joy Holtzman became presiding rabbi of the congregation Beth Israel in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, making her the first woman to head a congregation in the United States.

Rabbi Holtzman is fitted for a robe shortly after her appointment.
