During midyear tests near Yuma, Arizona, a 2-1/2-ton army truck is stowed aboard an Air Force C-130 Hercules. Parachutes enable the truck to withstand a drop of 1,500 feet. West German soldiers in Hamburg welcome their first German-made military plane in September. Manufacturing plans included 112 of these French-designed transports.

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Laboratories developed these heat-resisting aluminum outfits for fire fighters.
Poland celebrated its 14th year of freedom from German occupation in July. A military parade, including amphibious troop carriers and tanks, highlighted festivities in Lodz. An Italian military parade seen through an archway of the Colosseum in Rome. The parade was given to celebrate the 12th aniversary of the modern Italian Republic.
During the early months of 1958, South Korean and United Nations troops participated in Operation Snowflake in the hills south of Seoul. It was the largest training exercise since 1953. An instructor at the Heliopolis Military Academy in Egypt gives students a demonstration in hand-to-hand fighting. The Academy is open to men of Arab and African armies.
Shock-absorbing paperboard lashed to this antitank gun permits safe, accurate drops from the air. A U.S. soldier tests a new "sniperscope." The device, used on a variety of infantry weapons from the .30 caliber rife to the 106-mm recoiless rifle, is designed for sighting at night.
U.S. troops relax on an airstrip at Adana, Turkey. They had been flown there in July from bases in Germany to strenghten the armed forces in the Middle East. An injured paratrooper receives first aid after a mass drop of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky in April. High ground winds hampered the exercise, in which 5 paratroopers were killed and many injured.
Israeli women parade in Jerusalem during celebration of Israel's 10th year of independence. Women are members of the regular troops in Israel.
