Nelly Leonie Sachs Nobel Laureate
Nelly Leonie Sachs was born in Berlin on
December 10, 1891, the daughter of a wealthy
manufacturer. She studied music and dancing, and
at an early age began writing poetry.
As a Jewish refugee, she
arrived in Sweden with her mother on May 16,
1940. Her career as a poet of note did not start
until after her emigration. As a poet, she became
a poignant spokesman for the grief and yearnings
of her fellow Jews.
