East Germany in 1958 At
Fürstenwalde, 18 miles east of Berlin, soldiers and
tanks prepare to leave on February 27, beginning a
promised withdrawal of some Soviet troops from East
Germany. Soviet soldiers in a farewell parade at
Brandenberg. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev reviews an honor
guard in East Berlin on July 9. Delegates of Communist parties from 46 nations gathered on July 10 to attend the Fifth Congress of the East German Socialist Unity Party. The meeting was considered to be part of the Soviet effort to unify East European opposition to revisionist policies of Yugoslavia's President Tito. On July 19 East Germany released nine U.S. soldiers who had been held since their helicopter made an emergency landing near Zwickau on June 8. SEE ALSO |
