| The Commonwealth an
association of 53 sovereign nations that support each
other and work together towards international goals
At one time, most of these nations were part of the
British Empire and swore allegiance to the British Crown.
All are now fully independent and swear allegiance only
to a set of common values and goals. According to terms
of the London Declaration, issued in 1949, member nations
agree to recognize the British monarch as the Head of the
Commonwealth, with no actual governing authority.
