Carol I
Prince Karl Eitel Friedrich was elected
Prince of Romania in 1866, and served in that capacity
until Romania gained its independence from the Ottoman
Empire in 1881, at which time he was crowned King Carol
I. Although he did not speak the language and was
initially unfamiliar with the customs of his people, he
enjoyed immense popularity.
Ferdinand
Prince Ferdinand Viktor Albert Meinrad of
Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen became King of Romania upon the
death of his uncle, Carol I. As king, he led Romania
against the Central Powers in the latter years of World
War I.
Michael
was the last King of Romania.
