Afghanistan in 1978 A bloody coup spearheaded by members of the armed forces on April 27, 1978, led to the overthrow of Sardar Mohammad Daud and establishment of a pro-Soviet regime headed by Noor Mohammad Taraki, who renamed the country the People's Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Troops and tanks remained in the
