Sudan in 1969 On May 25, left-wing army officers overthrew the government of Prime Minister Muhammad Ahmed Mahgoub in a bloodless coup and established military rule. The leader of the coup, Colonel Jafaar Muhammad al-Nimery (promoted to Major General after the coup) and eight other officers appointed themselves the Revolutionary Command Council, and Abubakr Awadallah, a former chief justice, was appointed Prime Minister of a primarily civilian government. In October, Awadallah was deposed by the Command Council and was replaced by al-Nimery. Thousands of Sudanese march through
the streets of Khartoum carrying banners to show support
for the coup. SEE ALSO |
