1979 Track and Field Highlights

British runner Sebastian Coe broke three world track records in 41 days in 1979. On July 5, he ran the 800-meter in 1 minute 42.4 seconds in Oslo, Norway. On July 17, he won the mile there in 3:48.95. His final record came on August 15, when he ran the 1,500-meter in 3:32.03 in Zurich, Switzerland, and he thus became the first person to hold all three of those records at the same time. Not surprisingly, he was voted "Athlete of the Year" by both Athletics Weekly and Track and Field News, and was ranked number one in the world at 800m and 1500m. Bill Rodgers won his second straight Boston Marathon (April 16) in 2 hours 9 minutes 27 seconds. Joan Benoit led the women, in 2 hours 35 minutes 15 seconds.

The World Cup II track meet was held in Montreal, Canada, August 24-26. American sprinter Evelyn Ashford stole the show by winning the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, beating world record holders each time.
