1959 Tennis News and Highlights Alex Olmedo won the men's singles championship at Wimbledon on July 3 by defeating Rod Laver 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Maria Esther Bueno won the women's singles title on July 4 by defeating Darlene Hard 6-4, 6-3. Doubles winners were: men, Neale Fraser and Roy Emerson; women, Darlene Hard and Jeanne Arth; mixed, Darlene Hard and Rod Laver. Alex Olmedo displays his Wimbledon
trophy. Bernard Bartzen won the men's title at the 49th National Clay Court Tournament at the River Forest (Illinois) Tennis Club on July 20 by beating Whitney Reed 6-0, 8-6, 7-5. Sally Moore beat Sandra Reynolds 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in the women's finals. Bartzen teamed with Grant Golden to defeat R. Dennis Ralston and William Bond, 12-10, 6-2, 6-4, for the men's doubles title. Reynolds and Renee Schuurman beat Jeanne Arth and Janet Hopps 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 to win the women's doubles. The Wightman Cup was won by a U.S. team in final matches at Sewickley, Pennsylvania, on August 16. Beverly Baker Fleitz won two of the four American victories against British opponents. Neale Fraser and Roy Emerson defeated Alex Olmedo and Earl Buchholz, Jr., 3-6. 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 to win the USLTA Doubles Championship at Longwood Cricket Club, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, August 23. Jeanne M. Arth and Darlene R. Hard retained their women's doubles title by defeating Maria Esther Bueno and Sally M. Moore, 6-2, 6-3. In the 1959 Challenge Round of the Davis Cup competition, played at Forest Hills, New York, August 28-31, Australia defeated the United States 3 matches to 2. With the score evan attwo-all the deciding match singles match between Neale Fraser of Australia and Barry MacKay of the United States had to be postponed because of darkness on the third day, after each had won one set. The next day, Fraser won two sets and the match at 8-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Neale Fraser proudly displays the Davis Cup that
he and his teammates won. Neale Fraser won the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association singles title by defeating Alex Olmedo in the final at Forest Hills on September 13, by a score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Maria Esther Bueno defeated Christine Truman to win the women's singles, 6-1, 6-4. Margaret Osborne duPont was a member of the winning mixed doubles team for the eighth time when she and Fraser successfully defended their 1958 title by defeating Janet Hopps and Robert Mark. Althea Gibson and Karol Fageros signed in New York, New York, October 19, to make a pro exhibition tennis tour in conjunction with the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team.
