1932 Winter Olympic Games

The third Olympic Winter Games were held in Lake Placid, New York, from February 4 through February 13, 1932. The idea of bringing the Winter Olympics to Lake Placid was primarily the brainchild of Godfrey Dewey. Dewey's father was Melvil Dewey, who had founded the Dewey Decimal System, but who had also helped found the Lake Placid Club in 1895. Originally a summer resort, in 1904 Melvil Dewey decided to open the club for winter activities and it became famous for its winter sports. At the time, Lake Placid was a resort town with a population of less than 4,000. Many were skeptical about Lake Placid's chances, but once the bid was awarded in 1929, the town not only supported the effort, but it also voted in a new tax to pay the town's portion of the 1932 games. This unique legislation facilitated the construction of the venues for the games.

Facts and Highlights

These were the first Winter Olympic Games to be held in North America.

A total of 252 athletes (21 women, 231 men) from 17 nations competed in the games.

Medals were awarded in 14 events in 5 sports (7 disciplines): Bobsleigh, Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, Nordic Skiing (Cross-country, Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping), Speed Skating. There were also three demonstration sports: Curling, Sled Dog Race, Speed Skating (Women).

The Games were officially opened by then-Governor of New York Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The Olympic Oath was given by speed skater John Ames "Jack" Shea.

When American Eddie Eagan won a gold medal in the four-man bobsleigh, he became the first person ever to win medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, having won a light heavyweight boxing gold in 1920.

Because the team from Great Britain consisted of just four women figure skaters, Mollie Phillips had the honor of becoming the first woman ever to carry the British flag into the stadium during the Opening Ceremony.

For the first and only time in Olympic history, the American group race method was used in the speed skating competition. This involved mass starts and athletes racing against all other competitors, in contrast to the European system of heats where two participants compete against each other and the clock.

Warm weather conditions caused the holding of the four-man bobsleigh competition to be delayed until two days after the Closing Ceremony was held.
