The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4 games to 2 to win the World Series.

Lou Brock broke Ty Cobb's career stolen bases record during the season, and ended the season with a total of 900.

A team from Taipei, Taiwan, defeated a team from El Cajon, California, to win the Little League World Series.

BASKETBALL

The Portland Trail Blazers won the NBA Championship, on June 5.

BOATING

The U. S. yacht Courageous defeated the Australian yacht Australia in four straight races to keep the America's Cup in the United States. The races were held off Newport, Rhode Island, September 13, 16, 17, and 18.

BOXING

On September 29, Madison Square Garden, Muhammad Ali successfully defended his heavyweight crown against Earnie Shavers. Shavers repeatedly staggered Ali but never knocked him down, and Ali ultimately won with a unanimous decision.

FOOTBALL

The Oakland Raiders defeated the Minnesota Vikings 32-14 Super Bowl XI, on January 9.

Texas ended the regular season ranked #1, but lost that ranking after being defeated by Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.

Tom Watson won the Master's, on April 10.

Hollis Stacy blasts out of a sand trap on her way to winning the U. S. Women's Open, on July 24.

Lanny Wadkins wins the World Series of Golf, on September 5.

HORSE RACING

On June 11, Seattle Slew won the Belmont Stakes and became the 10th horse to win the Triple Crown.

ICE HOCKEY

Montral Canadien stars Yvan Cournoyer and Serge Sarvard ride a parade float with the Stanley Cup they and their teammates won by defeating the Boston Bruins in four straight games, May 7-14.

ICE SKATING

Winners of the U. S. Figure Skating Championships were: Men, Charles Tickner; Women, Linda Fratianne; Pairs, Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner; Dance, Judi Genovese and Kent Weigle.

World Championship Winners were: Men, Vladimir Kovalev; Women, Linda Fratianne; Pairs, Irina Rodnina and Alexander Minenkov; Dance, Irina Moiseyeva and Andrei Minenkov.

SKIING

Ingemar Stenmark won the Men's World Cup Championship; Lisa-Marie Morerod won the Women's Championship.

Ulrike Tauber on her way to a record-setting time of 2:15.85 in the 200-meter individual medley.

TENNIS

Guillermo Vilas defeated Jimmy Connors to win the men's singles title at the U. S. Open; Chris Evert retained the women's singles title.
