The first ever strike by U. S. Post Office workers began on March 18, 1970, with more than 200,000 postal workers walking off their jobs and demanding higher wages. On March 23, President Richard Nixon ordered National Guard troops into New York City, New York, to sort and deliver the mail. Two days later the postal workers were back on the job, the Guardsmen were sent home, and the postal unions began bargaining with the Post Office for an increase in wages.
