White House Christmas Tree
Ceremonies held near
Presque Isle, Maine, on November 27 marked the
cutting of the first White House Christmas Tree
to come from east of the Mississippi River.
Seventy feet tall and weighing three tons, the
white spruce tree was shipped to Washington,
D.C., on two Bangor and Aroostock Railroad flat
cars by courtesy of the Bangor and Aroostock,
Boston and Maine, Delaware and Hudson, and
Pennsylvania railroads. The lighting ceremony was
held on December 23.
