March 23 An earthquake with an estimated 5.7 magnitude struck the San Francisco, California, area. No serious injuries were reported and structural damage was relatively minor; infrastructure damage (primarily roads) was fairly widespread, however.

March 26 A blizzard that covered 13 western U.S. states caused 40 deaths and severely hampered transportation and communication throughout the region.

April 8 Tornadoes in six southern U.S. states killed 22 persons and injured a reported 100.

April 23 Earthquakes and floods killed a reported 44 persons in Kejur Mesqal, Iran.

April 28 An earthquake killed a reported 23 persons and injured more than 100 at Fethiye, Turkey.

May 16 A tornado that struck the Silverton, Texas, area killed a reported 21 persons and injured 58.


May 20 A tornado that tore through the Ruskin Heights and Hickman Mills areas of Kansas City, Missouri, killed a reported 39 persons and injured 99. [contemporary story]

May 21 Tornadoes killed a reported 13 persons and injured 70 in the St. Louis, Missouri, area.

May 24 Three tornadoes struck Lawton, Oklahoma, killing 3 persons.

May 26 An earthquake that struck the Seben-Bolu, Turkey, area killed a reported 53 persons and injured 119.


June Flooding caused by torrential rains forced the evacuation of nearly 40,000 people from the Po River delta area of Italy.

June Rain storms, tornadoes, and floods through the Alps regions of France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland killed 17 persons and injured 60. Property damage was estimated at more than $150,000,000.

June 2 Flooding along the Texas-Oklahoma border killed 4 persons and caused an estimated $130,000,000 property damage.

June 14 Flash flooding along the Meramec River south of St. Louis, Missouri, killed a reported 17 persons and left 4 missing and presumed dead.

June 14 A tornado killed 2 persons in the Springfield, Illinois, area.

June 20 Ten persons were killed and another 75 injured when a tornado struck Fargo, North Dakota.

June 25-29 Hurricane Audrey struck the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, from Louisiana to Texas, and then traveled inland through much of central North America. A reported 534 persons were killed and approximately 190 were reported missing; at least $146 million in damages was done.

June 25-28 Typhoon Virginia killed 86 persons in Formosa and Japan.

July 3 An earthquake in northern Iran killed a reported 1,564 persons and destroyed scores of resort villages around Mount Demavend.

July 17 A reported 54 persons were killed by typhoons and floods that struck Mabini, Philippines. Another 35 persons were missing and presumed dead.

July 21 Heavy floods along the Yi, Shu, and Yellow rivers in Shantung Province, China, caused a reported 560 deaths.

July 27 Heavy rains in the northwest part of Kyushu Island, Japan, caused the deaths of a reported 592 persons and left another 408 missing and presumed dead.

July 28 Mexico was struck by an earthquake. The tremors began near Acapulco and Chilpancingo at 2:37 a.m. and lasted for three minutes (not including aftershocks). The heaviest damage occurred in Mexico City, where a new apartment building collapsed, killing 33 residents. Hundreds of adobe homes were destroyed, the International Building, which housed the Canadian Embassy and the offices of many international businesses, was all but destroyed, the 15-story Continental Hilton Hotel was severly damaged, and the famous gilded angel atop the monument to Mexican independence was thrown to the ground and smashed. A third of the buildings in Chilpancingo were destroyed, but damage in Acapulco was relatively slight. The total number of casualties was officially set at 71.

August 3-10 Floods along the Naktong River near Kupo, South Korea, caused the deaths of 198 persons and left 49 missing and presumed dead.

August 25 Torrential rains and resulting floods in West Pakistan caused the deaths of 75 persons.

September Flash floods near Ankara, Turkey, killed about a thousand persons.

October Valencia, Spain, and the surrounding coastal area were struck by a major flood of the Turia River. More than 60 persons were reported killed or missing.

December 13 An earthquake in western Iran killed 1,287 persons. The village of Farsan, home to 1,100 residents, was completely destroyed.

December 18 A tornado that ripped across southern Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana killed at least 26 persons.

March 15 A head-on collision of two trains between Tampere and Haemeenlinna, Finland, killed 24 persons and injured 51.

June 5 The collision of two trains near Cortazar, Mexico, killed 14 persons and left 16 others missing and presumed dead.

June 11 A train-truck collision at Vroman, Colorado, killed 12 migrant farm workers in the truck and injured 5.

July 19 Twenty-nine persons were killed and 67 injured in a train derailment at Bollène, France.

August 4 A reported 22 Spanish soldiers were killed and 51 injured when a troop train crashed into a locomotive near Villaverde, Spain.

September 7 Twenty-three persons were killed and 20 injured in a train derailment at Nozières, France.

September 29 A train ran off a cliff near Ibadan, Nigeria. Twenty persons were reported killed, 122 injured, and 300 still missing.

October 1 The collision of two trains at Gambar, West Pakistan, killed 250 persons.

October 20 Two trains collided near Catalca, Turkey, killing 89 persons and injuring 171.

December 5 The collision of two commuter trains outside London, England, killed 5 persons and injured 172.

VEHICLE

June 6 Twenty farm laborers were killed and another 17 injured when a truck collided with a tractor-trailer near Fayetteville, North Carolina. [contemporary story]

June 13 Fourteen soldiers were killed and 9 injured when a U.S. Army truck overturned on a curve and fell into a creek at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

August 11 Twenty-eight persons were burned to death and 16 were injured when a bus plunged into a ravine at Seoul, South Korea.

August 29 Forty-one persons were killed when a truck went off the road and into a river at Sokoto, Nigeria.

October 3 Thirty persons drowned when a bus plunged into the Jucar River near Cuenca, Spain.
