Jamestown Festival

The celebration of the 350th anniversary of the founding of the first permanent English settlement in North America opened on April 1, 1957, and ran to the end of the year.

During the summer about 6,000 people visited the colonial reproduction every day. Most notable of the foreign visitors were Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip of the United Kingdom, who made a formal two-day tour of Jamestown and Williamsburg in October.

Restored buildings at Jamestown Colonial National Park were opened to the public during the Jamestown Festival.

As part of the Jamestown Festival, two actors playing colonists sit in the guardhouse stocks. One of them is strung up by his thumbs.
