In 1958, William H. Meyer became the first Democrat from Vermont to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives since 1850. A forest conservationist from West Rupert, Meyer defeated Harold J. Arthur of Burlington for the seat vacated by Winston L. Prouty, who was elected to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the retirement of Ralph E. Flanders. Ironically, Meyer lost in his home town by 100 votes.
