Governor of Louisiana 1939-1940, 1948-1952, and 1956-1960

Well known throughout his career for eccentric behavior, Long was said by some to suffer from bipolar disorder. During his last term as Governor his wife, Blanche Revere Long, and others attempted to remove him on the grounds of mental instability. In 1959 his wife had him committed to John Sealy Hospital at Galveston, Texas. Mrs. Long withdrew her commitment after a habeas corpus hearing, and the Governor returned to Louisiana and entered Ochsner Foundation Hospital (a private facility) in New Orleans. After a stay of just 24 hours his wife again signed commitment papers, sending him to Southeast Louisiana State Hospital in Mandeville. Long regained his freedom after 10 days by firing the director of the Department of Hospitals and the superintendent of the State Hospital and replacing them with two persons who testified as to his competency. He was released on June 26.
