Official Symbols of Delaware The current design of the state flag was adopted on July 24, 1913. It has a background of colonial blue surrounding a diamond of buff color in which the coat of arms of the state is placed. Below the diamond are the words "December 7, 1787." |
Important Dates in Delaware 1609 English explorer Henry Hudson sailed into present-day Delaware Bay. 1638 Swedish settlers founded New Sweden, the first permanent settlement in Delaware. 1776 Delaware became a separate state and adopted its first constitution. December 7, 1787 Delaware became the first state to ratify the United States Constitution. |
