In 1610, a ship from the Virginia colony sailed into what is now Delaware Bay. The captain of that ship named the bay De La Warr Bay for Lord De La Warr, the Governor of Virginia.

Official Symbols of Delaware
The current design of the state flag was adopted on July 24, 1913. It has a background of colonial blue surrounding a diamond of buff color in which the coat of arms of the state is placed. Below the diamond are the words "December 7, 1787."

Important Dates in Delaware
1609 English explorer Henry Hudson sailed into present-day Delaware Bay. 1638 Swedish settlers founded New Sweden, the first permanent settlement in Delaware. 1776 Delaware became a separate state and adopted its first constitution. December 7, 1787 Delaware became the first state to ratify the United States Constitution.

Wilmington
is the largest city and chief manufacturing center of Delaware. It is the home of Du Pont, one of the largest chemical manufacturing companies in the world, and over 60 percent of the world's Fortune 500 companies have offices in Wilmington.
