HERBERT CLARK HOOVER

Herbert Hoover was a self-made multi-millionaire when he entered public life. After World War I began, he took on the task of distributing food to the Belgian people. He then became food administrator in the United States, supervising the production and distribution of food for American soldiers and civilians, as well as the nation's allies. He succeeded so well that President Warren G. Harding appointed him Secretary of Commerce in 1921, a position he held until running for President in 1928.

Chronology of His Life and Career

	August 10, 1874	Born in West Branch, Iowa.
	1880	His father, Jesse Clark Hoover, died.
	1884	His mother, Hulda Minthorn Hoover, died.
	1885	Sent to live with his uncle, John Minthorn, in Oregon.
	1895	Graduated from Stanford University.
		Worked at a gold mine near Nevada City, California.
	1897	Became managing engineer of gold mines in Australia.
	1898	Became Chief Engineer of the Chinese Imperial Bureau of Mines.
	February 10, 1899	Married Lou Henry.
	June 1900	Helped defend Tientsin, China, during the Boxer Rebellion.
	1908	Established his own mine engineering firm.
	1914	Headed the Commission for the Relief of Belgium.
	1917	Named United States Food Administrator.
	1918	Appointed head of the European Relief and Rehabilitation Administration.
	1919-1920	Built a home in Palo Alto, California.
	1919	Founded the Hoover Library on War, Revolution, and Peace at Stanford University.
	1921	Appointed Secretary of Commerce.
	1928	Elected President of the United States.
	1944	Mrs. Lou Henry died.
	1945	Named chairman of the Famine Emergency Commission.
	1947	Named chairman of the Hoover Commission.
	1954	The Herbert Hoover Foundation was established.
	April 19, 1958	Had his gall bladder removed.
	April 1958	Published The Ordeal of Woodrow Wilson.
	July 1958	Visited the Brussels World's Fair as President Dwight Eisenhower's personal representative.
	August 10, 1958	Celebrated his 84th birthday.
	August 27, 1958	Earmarked his $25,000-a-year government pension for public service activities and charities.
	October 20, 1964	Died in New York City.
