JAMES EARL CARTER

Jimmy Carter (he almost never used his full name) was relatively unknown outside of his native Georgia when he announced his intention to run for President of the United States. After winning the Democratic nomination on the first ballot, he went on to defeat incumbent President Gerald Ford by a popular vote margin of 40,800,000 to 39,100,000.

Chronology of His Life and Career

October 1, 1924 Born in Plains, Georgia.
1941 Graduated from the Archery (Ga.) High School.
1941-1942 Attended Georgia Southwestern College.
1942-1943 Attended Georgia Institute of Technology.
June 1943 Enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy.
July 7, 1946 Married Eleanor Rosalynn Smith.
1948 Entered submarine school.
1952 Accepted into the U.S. Navy's prototype nuclear submarine training program.
1953 Resigned from the Navy to take over the family farm in Plains.
1962 Elected to the Georgia State Senate.
1966 Ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Georgia.
1970 Elected Governor of Georgia.
1976 Elected President of the United States.
1980 Lost his bid for a second term as President.
1981 The Carter Presidential Library opened in Atlanta, Georgia.
1982 Became University Distinguished Professor at Emory University.
1986 The Carter Center was dedicated in Atlanta.
1999 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter both received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
2002 Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
2002 Jimmy Carter became the first President, in or out of office, to visit Cuba since the 1959 Revolution.
