JAMES EARL CARTER Jimmy Carter (he
almost never used his full name) was relatively unknown
outside of his native Georgia
when he announced his intention to run for President of
the United States. After winning the Democratic
nomination on the first ballot, he went on to defeat
incumbent President Gerald
Ford by a popular vote margin of 40,800,000 to
39,100,000.
