Vice-President Nixon in Russia, 1959

Vice-President Nixon flew to Moscow, Russia, on July 22, 1959, for an 11-day visit to the U.S.S.R. One of the principal stops on his itinerary was to officially open the American National Exhibition in Moscow's Sokolniki Park.

The "kitchen-cabinet debate" between Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, an impromptu and somewhat heated exchange at the American National Exhibition, was heard and seen by millions of people around the world thanks to radio and television coverage.
