Carlos Ibáñez del
Campo
rose to political prominence as a result
of the bloodless military coup that ousted President
Arturo Alessandri Palma in September 1924, and was
elected President of Chile in 1927. During his
administration the country enjoyed growing economic
prosperity, which he used to initiate a series of public
works projects.
Augusto José
Ramón Pinochet Ugarte
was a career military officer who seized control of
Chile's government in 1973. Despite being known for his
brutal repression of opposition, he allowed Chileans to
vote him out of office in 1990.
