Argentina in 1957 Tension and turmoil marked Argentina's 1957 fight against the depression left by the Perón dictatorship. population 19,486 On February 17, Provisional President Major General Pedro Eugenio Aramburo promised to hold a free election for a new government not later than February 1958. On March 30 he called for election of a Constituent Assembly to consider constitutional reforms. The election, held July 28, gave him a majority; and on September 24 the new Assembly ratified the restoration of the 1853 constitution, 105 to 0. Candidates for a promised general
election used the election of a Constituent Assembly to
