On November 18, 1960, the International Court of Justice ruled that the arbitration award made in 1906 by King Alfonso XIII of Spain, relative to the boundary between Hondruas and Nicaragua, was valid and it thereby rendered its judgment against Nicaragua's claim to the Mosquito Coast. Nicaragua had based its claim to the territory on a treaty between the two countries signed in 1894, and had first challenged King Alfonso's ruling in 1912.
