1978 Horse Racing Highlights Thoroughbred Racing Affirmed, owned by Florida breeder Louis Wolfson, was named best three-year-old colt and Horse of the Year. Ridden by Steve Cauthen, Affirmed beat out Calumet Farm's Alydar by 1½ lengths in the Kentucky Derby, by a neck in the Preakness, and by a nose in the Belmont Stakes to win the Triple Crown, while Alydar became the first horse ever to finish second in all three Triple Crown events. Affirmed, on the rail, noses ahead of Alydar down
the stretch of the Belmont Stakes (June 10). Seattle Slew, best three-year-old of 1977, won five of seven starts, was voted the best older horse, and narrowly lost to Affirmed in the voting for Horse of the Year before being retired to stud with lifetime earnings of $1,208,726. SEE ALSO |
