Brahman cattle thrive in the hot, humid climate of the southern United States, especially in states bordering the Gulf of Mexico. They have short hair and well-developed sweat glands that enable them to withstand heat and humidity.

Most of these cattle are light gray or nearly black, although a few are red. It is characterized by a fleshy hump over its shoulders.

American breeders developed the Brahman by crossing various kinds of Zebu, the humped cattle of India, which were imported into the United States from 1854 to 1926.
