Ayrshire dairy breed These cattle are red and white or brown and white. Some are nearly all red or all white. Bulls have long, curving horns. This breed came from the hilly country of Ayr in southwest Scotland. It is more rugged than other breeds, and it thrives in hilly country. Ayrshires were brought to the United States in 1822, and later spread to the Pacific Coast and into Canada. Ayrshire milk production ranks between Brown Swiss and Guernsey. SEE ALSO |
